PMI Project, Program, and Portfolio Management¶
This perspective states Alescent's posture toward PMI-sourced thinking on Project Management, Program Management, Portfolio Management, and Organizational Project Management.
Domain Classification¶
PMI-sourced project, program, and portfolio thinking may relate to two Value Realization Domains:
- Projects. When the subject is the work object, delivery object, investment vehicle, project, program, portfolio, initiative, or aggregation structure through which value realization is pursued.
- Practices. When the subject is the repeatable management discipline, professional standard, governance practice, methodology, toolset, or protocol for managing those objects.
The primary classification should be Projects when the work object is the subject. The secondary classification should be Practices when the management discipline is the subject.
Alescent Position¶
Alescent recognizes PMI-sourced thinking as important professional infrastructure for project, program, and portfolio management.
Alescent's position is a "yes, and" position:
- yes, PMI-sourced thinking provides useful language, discipline, governance constructs, role expectations, and professional standards for managing work;
- and, Value Realization requires projects, programs, and portfolios to be governed by value logic, investment logic, evidence, realization conditions, and sustained outcomes rather than delivery completion alone.
Value Realization Extension¶
A Value Realization-based perspective asks:
- What value is the project, program, or portfolio intended to realize?
- Which Effects are intended, protected, or contributed to?
- What Investment is being committed?
- What Value Statement or value hypothesis governs the work?
- What evidence distinguishes progress, delivery, benefit, and realized value?
- What realization conditions must persist after delivery?
- What baseline, counterfactual, assumptions, risks, dependencies, exclusions, and validation responsibilities apply?
- What Value Realization Event or reporting period will evidence realization?
Project Management¶
Project Management is useful where a discrete work object requires scope, schedule, cost, risk, stakeholder, quality, resource, communication, procurement, or integration discipline.
Alescent should extend Project Management by asking whether the project remains connected to the value it was intended to realize.
Project completion is not equivalent to Value Realization.
Program Management¶
Program Management is useful where multiple related projects, capabilities, workstreams, or changes must be coordinated to achieve outcomes not available from individual project delivery alone.
Alescent should extend Program Management by asking whether program coordination is improving the realization pathway, reducing value leakage, governing dependencies, or protecting the value case.
Program governance is not equivalent to Value Realization.
Portfolio Management¶
Portfolio Management is useful where multiple projects, programs, initiatives, investments, or work objects must be selected, prioritized, balanced, sequenced, governed, or adjusted as a group.
Alescent should extend Portfolio Management by asking whether portfolio decisions optimize realized value, not merely strategic alignment, resource allocation, delivery balancing, or executive preference.
Portfolio prioritization is not equivalent to Economic Optimization unless value logic, investment logic, and evidence are governed.
Preferred Use¶
Use PMI-sourced language when derived content must communicate with project, program, portfolio, PMO, EPMO, transformation, or delivery audiences.
Use Value Realization language when the emphasis is value definition, economic effect, investment, evidence, validation, realized outcome, or commercial alignment.
Prohibited Use¶
Do not import PMI terminology into controlled vocabulary without taxonomy governance.
Do not treat project delivery as value realization.
Do not treat program governance as evidence of value.
Do not treat portfolio scoring or prioritization as economic optimization without value evidence.
Do not collapse Alescent's Projects Domain into PMI's project-management discipline.
