Vendor Management and Strategic Sourcing¶
This perspective states Alescent's posture toward Vendor Management and Strategic Sourcing as common partner, procurement, sourcing, and commercial governance disciplines.
Domain Classification¶
Vendor Management and Strategic Sourcing are primarily Practices-domain constructs when they refer to repeatable methods for sourcing, selecting, contracting, governing, managing, measuring, renewing, replacing, or rationalizing vendors and suppliers.
They also touch Partners because vendors, suppliers, providers, resellers, integrators, and other counterparties may contribute to, constrain, enable, or capture value.
Alescent Position¶
Alescent recognizes Vendor Management and Strategic Sourcing as important disciplines for improving commercial terms, partner performance, supply reliability, cost, risk, accountability, and market leverage.
Alescent's position is a "yes, and" position:
- yes, Vendor Management and Strategic Sourcing provide useful discipline for partner selection, commercial governance, performance management, and procurement outcomes;
- and, Alescent extends these disciplines by asking whether vendor relationships, sourcing decisions, commitments, and commercial terms create, protect, accelerate, assure, or erode realized value.
Value Realization Extension¶
A Value Realization-based extension of Vendor Management and Strategic Sourcing emphasizes:
- Partners as contributors to value, not merely suppliers of goods or services;
- sourcing as an investment and value-design decision, not merely a procurement event;
- commitments as economic obligations requiring alignment to demand, value, and timing;
- contract terms as value-enabling or value-constraining conditions;
- vendor performance as value contribution, not only SLA attainment;
- renewal, renegotiation, rationalization, and termination as value-realization decisions;
- commercial optimization, commitment optimization, cost optimization, cashflow optimization, and control optimization as related Effects.
Preferred Use¶
Use Vendor Management or Strategic Sourcing language where derived content must connect to procurement, sourcing, vendor governance, supplier performance, renewal, contracting, or partner strategy audiences.
Use Value Realization language where the discussion concerns value contribution, economic Effects, commitments, commercial alignment, partner accountability, or realized outcomes.
Prohibited Use¶
Do not treat lower price as automatically better value.
Do not treat procurement compliance as realized value.
Do not treat SLA attainment as sufficient evidence of value contribution.
Do not treat vendors as interchangeable suppliers where partner capability, risk, optionality, data, integration, or value contribution is material.
